RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Mathematics and Statistics

The Head(s) of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are expected to (jointly) fulfil the following roles and responsibilities: 

  • provide leadership within the department in thinking about strategy for the development of the department and future directions;
  • provide overview of the financial budget for the department, including proposing priorities for spend from the Mathematics and Statistics budget, and taking an overview of the financial health of the department;
  • recommend to the HoS staff for promotion, additional increments, one-off payments, teaching and learning awards, and work with staff to ensure that cases submitted are of high quality;
  • allocate workload, namely teaching, management and administration duties required to carry out the teaching and research activities of the department, especially the delegation of roles to academic staff, taking into account in doing this research, research-related, teaching and other activities of individual staff members;
  • encourage and support staff development in the department, e.g. through staff development reviews and encouraging and supporting attendance at conferences and training courses;
  • as appropriate, approve or support requests from department staff (such as for the University study leave, consultancy), plus sign travel expense forms, etc., as delegated by HoS;
  • give thought to the space needs of the department;
  • act as Line Manager to the academic staff in the department;
  • ensure that departmental activities support University equality and diversity objectives, Athena SWAN principles, and our Athena SWAN action plan.

Specific duties of the Head of Mathematics and Statistics with responsibility for Academic Staff and Teaching: 

  • provide, in collaboration with the Head of School and the School Director of Teaching and Learning (and in collaboration with other locally appointed staff) academic leadership to the department in teaching, learning, support and assessment;
  • assist the Head of School and the School Director of Teaching and Learning in preparing strategic plans for the School, especially as they relate to the development of the department and activity in Mathematics and Statistics teaching;
  • encourage, within the department the achievement of high standards of teaching and learning, assessment and in the academic and pastoral support of students;
  • ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for undergraduate students in the department, including recruitment;
  • working with the Head of School and School Director of Teaching and Learning, provide leadership in terms of promoting the department to the University and externally.

 

Specific duties of the Head of Mathematics and Statistics with responsibility for Academic Staff and Research: 

  • provide, in collaboration with the Head of School and the School Director of Research, (and in collaboration with other locally appointed staff) academic leadership to the department in research;
  • assist the Head of School and the School Director of Research, in preparing strategic plans for the School, especially as they relate to the development of the department and activity in Mathematics and Statistics research;
  • encourage within the department the achievement of good research practice, the acquisition of funding for research activity through grant and studentship applications, and appropriate contacts with industry, commerce, other organisations and learned societies;
  • encourage a strong and vibrant research environment within the department, and that the department plays a significant leadership role nationally and internationally to the discipline and research base;
  • ensure that effective plans are in place to achieve impact from our research;
  • ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for postgraduate students in the department, including recruitment;
  • working with the Head of School, to be pro-active in the recruitment of new academic and other staff, e.g. making cases for new staff, preparing adverts and further particulars, pro-actively seeking candidates;
  • working with the Head of School and School Director of Research, provide leadership in terms of promoting the department to the University and externally.
